Spot A Shark:
Sandtiger Shark Project
Spot A Shark USA is a citizen-science initiative that invites divers, snorkelers, and ocean enthusiast to photograph Sandtiger sharks along the Atlantic coast.
These images help researchers identify individual sharks using their unique spot patterns. As individual sharks are identified it allows researchers to monitor movement, behavior, and site fidelity. To identify and understand which coastal areas are critical habitats used for mating, pupping, and seasonal migration. Informing management decisions to protect Sandtiger sharks, which are critically endangered in parts of the world.

How you can participate:
Divers & Explorers:
If you are a diver, photographer, or simply spend time on the water, you can contribute by taking photos of sand tiger sharks and uploading them to the Spot A Shark USA website.
If a shark is new:
If a shark is not in the database, you may have the opportunity to name it.
Photograph sharks:
Divers and other water explorers take photos of sand tiger sharks they encounter.
Upload photos:
Images are uploaded to the Spot A Shark USA website, along with details like when and where the photo was taken.
Identify individual sharks:
Researchers use the unique spot patterns on the sharks, similar to human fingerprints, to identify individual animals. An algorithm, originally developed for stargazing, is used to compare photos and match sharks in the database. This data helps scientists learn about sand tiger shark behavior, migration patterns, and population health, especially since the species is listed as vulnerable.
